About Alton

Alton Thompson is a American conductor, artist and author. A native of Florida, he has made his home in the Beautiful Isle since 2004.

As a conductor Alton has performed with ensembles in Europe, North America and Asia. Ensembles he has led and conducted include: the Oskar Kolberg Philharmonia in Czechia; the Kielce National Philharmonia in Poland; the Taoyuan Symphonic Winds, Dong Hwa Symphony Orchestra, NTNU Senior Women’s Chorus, Tainan Tech Chamber Ensembles in Taiwan; and the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra and the Superior Wind Symphony in the USA.

As an actor and theatre music director Alton’s performances have been seen at The Lab in Taipei, the Fells Point Corner Theatre in Baltimore, and the Vagabond Theatre in Memphis. A radio play he wrote and directed recently aired in collaboration with ICRT radio in New Taipei. He is the author and director of a short film currently in planning in collaboration with a professional film studio in Taipei.

Alton’s photography has been exhibited in Taiwan’s National Palace Museum, National Concert Hall and Taipei Mayor’s Salon.

Winner of a Baltimore Writers Alliance award for fiction, Alton has published stories and essays as e-books through Dimetrodon Media; his scholarly writing is available through UMI.

As a mentor Alton has worked with young artists and scholars at the National Dong Hwa University in Hualien, the National Ilan University in Yilan, the National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, Fu Jen University in New Taipei, the Tainan University of Technology in southern Taiwan, and the Michigan Technological University in the USA.

Alton holds degrees from the Florida State University, the University of Memphis, and the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins.
